ALAN ROCKE GRANT
1897 – 1945

The name “Rocke” is a family name used by earlier generations of the Grants. My Grandfather, Alan Rocke Grant was born in Hobart on 19 May 1897. He was the son of Edward Elliot Grant (who was born 1847).

His father (my Great Great Grandfather) was Edward Henry Grant (who was born 1830 in Rome).

Edward Henry Grant’s father, (my Great Great Great Grandfather) Dr James Ogilve Grant, was the first Grant to
come to Australia. He arrived in 1815 as a medical practitioner with the Royal Navy. He was from Edinburgh Scotland and was one of the original Grants’ whose history can be traced back to the 16th century Mungo Grants of the Scottish Highlands. He died in Campbelltown NSW where his headstone still remains.

I never met Alan Rocke Grant as he died before I was born.

We do know that he had a colourful life, and that my father (Edward Elliot Alan Grant) spoke highly of him. He was a Stock and Wool Broker in Sydney and led (to say the least) a very social life. He served in both world wars (see Photograph) having first signed up at 17 years of age shortly after which he was sent to Gallipoli.

Alan Rocke Grant died in Sydney at the tender age of 48. I was always taught to “Enjoy Life to the Full”. My father often said “Enjoy a drink in moderation, but … only drink the best”.
